Make an old computer new again with OSx86

Sat Jul 4, 2009, 4:00 PM
Take most generic PCs built in the last five years, a legal copy of Mac OS X that you purchased in the store, and a few resources gathered from about the interwebs... put them together.

And you have your very own fake Macintosh computer. A Hackintosh if you will. I had an unloved PC lying around, a Compaq Presario SR1222NX which I'd dubbed "Gift Horse". It's a pretty decent box, really. 2.8GHz Pentium 4 515 (Prescott), SATA hard drive, a DVD reader and CD burner... but its video is reaaally sad. Intel GMA915. Oh... and it has 512MB of RAM. Sucky.

I had been running Windows 7 RC on it, but that was kinda crappy :p

Not that 7 isn't okay, it is. But that's it. It's only okay. Not good enough to make me ditch Vista.

Anyway!!

Using steps and resources that you can find on the webs for free, you can take the Mac OS X that you own and turn it into a CD that'll install on your PC. It's best to use the 10.5.x versions, called "Leopard", since they're designed to run on the new Mac computers with Intel processors.

You can use a 10.4 "Tiger" CD if it's an Intel install... but I don't think Apple sold retail copies of it for Intel.

Just go take a gander at the stuff. If you think you've got the guts... try it!!

Please remember though, to back up all of your data!! If you don't, you'll lose it all since Mac OS X will have to format your hard drive.

And there's no guarantee it'll work. Please be careful if you try it.

Wow, thank you so much for all the faves and comments! I love that you actually put thought into the comments, and don't just write "cool!". ;) I promise, as soon as I get a spare minute I'll go through your gallery and return the favour!!!

I can't let myself be terse and simple. I've a minor in English language and my girlfriend is a cartoonist. She's taught me the importance of telling an artist exactly how you feel about their work :)

You're very welcome, too. It's a great group of images you've posted. I hope there's a lot more to come! :D
I been good!
Just finished a pic that I actually drew!!
Coloured and everything, and it looks really good!! Which is surprising, for someone who has been drawing on paint only for the past two months, or more.
And the cool thing is, the style is the same as the paint style, it's just better because it wasn't as easy, although I won't say drawing on paint is easy :D

How bout you? How you been?
